Our latest Zoom workshop focused on shoka shimputai, led by Professor Linnéa Storm.

Professor Linnéa guided us through a comprehensive lesson, starting with an overview of the structure of a shoka shofutai.  Drawing parallels with the classical rikka style, Linnea highlighted the similarities between the two, emphasizing that shoka shimputai is essentially a refined and simplified version of rikka.

What sets shoka shimputai apart is its modern flair and the incorporation of the arranger’s personal expression through the key elements of “shu” and “yo.” This artistic freedom allows for a diverse range of interpretations, resulting in arrangements that are not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful.

During the workshop, we explored three distinct styles of shoka shimputai: isshuike (one material), nishuike (two materials), and sanshuike (three materials). Each style offers its own unique aesthetic and challenges, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of shoka shimputai.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Linnéa -sensei for yet another enriching Zoom experience filled with insight, creativity, and inspiration. We hope you enjoy exploring the beauty and depth of shoka shimputai as much as we did.
