January 18th, 2025 Shoka Sanshuike Workshop with Jeanne Holy

    • Shoka Shofutai

After spending the morning explaining and demonstrating shoka isshuike (one material shoka),  Jeanne Sensei turned to a three-material shoka, shoka sanshuike.  Originally called  “three friends of winter,”  the earliest sanshuike contained the Japanese winter and early spring plants of pine, bamboo, and plum.

The more “free” style of sanshuike developed in the 1900s when Western influence and plant materials became more prevalent in Japan.

Today, sanshuike can be either naturalistic or designed. The creator decides which type to arrange. Each of today’s eighteen participants made a selection and arranged sanshuike, naturalistic or designed.

Thank you, Jeanne Sensei, for all your suggestions to make our arrangements even more creative!
