December 6th 2025, Jiyuka Holiday Arrangement- Yuki Kataoka
In this festive workshop, Yuki Sensei led participants through a joyful all around holiday arrangement lesson, perfectly timed for the Christmas season. Before the lesson began, Linnéa Sensei presented certificates to students who had recently earned new ranks. Shibani Sangelkar received her Kasho (5th) certificate, and Yuki Kataoka was awarded her Kako (11th) certificate.
Yuki Sensei then introduced the group to Jiyuka, a freestyle, all-around arrangement well suited for holiday expression. While Jiyuka allows greater freedom than traditional Shoka, Yuki Sensei emphasized that important design principles still apply. One key concept she highlighted was asymmetry—using variation in height, form, and plant material to achieve a sense of balance within an intentionally asymmetrical composition.
She demonstrated a holiday Jiyuka arrangement, thoughtfully illustrating these considerations and offering guidance on how freedom and structure coexist within freestyle ikebana.
Participants then created their own unique holiday arrangements. The results of their creativity and learning are shared below for your enjoyment.
