This first workshop of our season was well attended with 11 arrangers and 3 friends coming. President Lauren Toth welcomed everyone back from another long, hot summer and quickly gave updates of news from Headquarters in Kyoto. She announced that the first Ginza sale of containers and supplies from Japan would be held during this morning with more to follow throughout the year. She then turned over the session to Sensei Wanda LaLoggia who gave a thoughtful presentation on the history of making arrangements in baskets and how they evolved over time in Japan. She then demonstrated a way to do this with a beautiful circular basket in the freestyle manner. One of her hints was to “Respect the handle” trying to use it as a frame for the arrangement (if your basket had a handle). She also showed photos of other very naturalistic baskets both with and without handles. After attendees made their arrangement, she then thoughtfully critiqued them.
